The Secret Behind Leprosy-Mycobacterium Leprae

Treatment   and   Prevention

Picture
When dealing with leprosy, there are a few treatments to suppress the bacterium, and also ways to prevent the contraction of the disease. The three main treatments for this disease are the antibiotics Dapsone, Rifampicin, and Clofazimine. Treatment for leprosy usually takes approximately six months to a year, and if it does not subside it will most likely take a much longer period of time.  Rifampicin is the most important out of the three main antibiotics when it comes to treating leprosy.  For leprosy sufferers, the World Health Organization(WHO) has been providing the drugs free of charge since 1995.  Side effects include swelling in the skin and pain in the nerves as this particular treatment progresses. Pain suppressors and other medications, like aspirin and prednisone, may help to ease the pain, control the inflammation, and relieve swelling.
Before treatment was available, a diagnosis of leprosy was primarily made apparent through pain and suffering.  In today's society, together with the medicine we have for skin diseases, there is now exceptional prevention from this gruesome disease.  Perhaps future medical breakthroughs may eliminate this disease in all of its forms.
